Earlier this month, Smasher Sherisse Malone competed in the Georgia Log & Deadlift Championships at Rise Athletic Club in Oakwood, Georgia.
It was her 5th strong[HU]man competition, and she surprised herself by going 6 for 6 on lifts and setting two new personal records and 2 USS Georgia State Records.
Congrats Sherisse!!!
Here’s an interview with the strongwoman recapping her competition experience:
How did you feel going into the competition?
Training for this meet went very well for me. I was excited felt good and I could definitely tell that I was getting stronger….but as the competition date got closer it seemed like everything thing else kicked up a notch.
Life outside of training was another story work obligations, school exams and running round with the kids just took a toll on me. I was getting so overwhelmed that I considered not even competing.
I told [my husband] Alan and he said, “you have talked about this competition since last year. You have worked really hard and I can really see an improvement in your lifts. If you don’t do this you know you’ll regret it.”
Did you perform as you expected?
No, I did way better than I thought. I was a little stressed and fatigued. I really didn’t think I would make past my 2nd attempts on either lifts.
What were your prior personal records, and what did you lift at the meet?
Prior log press PR was 105 lbs
At the meet I pressed 120lbs.
Prior deadlift PR was 290lbs
At the meet I pulled 300lbs.
At the meet I pulled 300lbs.
What was your highest point of the competition?
“I would have to say deadlifts because I really was shocked myself.
I didn’t pick my 2nd and 3rd attempts because I knew I would pick safe numbers based on how I felt.
I am so happy to have you Lis as my coach. You knew what I wanted and what I was capable of doing. You’re the best.”
Note from Lis:
Oh, STAHP IT. No… go on!
But seriously, I knew Sherisse has been wanting to pull 300 lbs for awhile.
She told me she wasn’t feeling well that day so I wasn’t sure she had the energy. But I checked in with her husband Alan and he agreed she should go for it.
So I set her up to pull 300 lbs on her 3rd attempt, after deadlifts 1 and 2 looked really good.
And I asked her kids Alana and Nico to help cheer for Mom as loud as possible to help her make the lift.
And … SHE DID IT!!!
What did you learn most regarding the competition that you will carry over to future comps?
That not all strongman equipment is the same.
Like the log I pressed was not constructed like the one I train with.
I really saw and felt difference in my lift due to smooth grip handle [on the competition log] vs having some knurling [on the one I typically train with].
In the future I plan on training with different types of grip handles and sizes.
Congrats on a great performance!
Sherisse Malone is planning to compete next in a USPA Georgia powerlifting meet later this year or early in 2019.
