This week Corbin & I break in our new toy at the garage gym – the Texas Deadlift Bar from Buddy Capps and EliteFTS.
Buddy Capps is a former Texas state powerlifting champ who has manufactured and distributed barbells through his business, Capps Welding, in Irving, Texas since 1979 (what a great year).
This barbell is different from a stiff powerlifting bar that is meant to bend very little, even under massive loads.
A deadlift bar is thinner in diameter, so it’s easier to grip.
It’s also longer than a regular barbell, so it will bend slightly and make the starting position of the deadlift easier to grind out of… but only once it’s loaded with 275 pounds or more. The greater the load, the greater the bend.
Also, for a sumo deadlifter, the bar will bend more given the narrower grip compared to a conventional deadlift grip (when feet are closer together but hands grip the bar further apart).
Corbin is competing next weekend at the USPA Georgia State Meet, and has never trained with a deadlift bar. Since more Team Lis Smashers are now lifting in the USPA, it was a good time to invest in a new toy!

I am feeling much better and more productive after a rough several months battling some health issues and grieving the loss of my father.
Unofficial diagnosis: Severe case of The Fuck Its.
I will be blogging more, vlogging regularly, and possibly relaunching the podcast with The Viking.
Did you know I’m a journalism school graduate, former host of BHS Live morning show and the 1996-97 Managing Editor of The Emblem newspaper?
‘Bout time I used that public school education.
