Mother Nature smashed the Winter Smash this weekend.
Yesterday afternoon I decided to cancel today’s USA Powerlifting Atlanta Winter Smash out of concern for the safety of our competitors and volunteers during the winter storm that recently passed through the Southeast.
I’m not only a meet director. I’m a coach and a lifter and a referee and a sponsor and a volunteer and a fan. I was devastated about the cancellation, as I can imagine many of you were, who have trained for weeks and months to prepare for this event.
I am SO sorry you can’t step on the platform today. But the safety of every lifter, volunteer, coach, sponsor and spectator was not guaranteed. And I won’t risk your pretty little heads.
Drew was going to squat over 400# for the first time. Conswella was going to squat 300# (or very close to it). 10-year-old Madison was going to deadlift well over her body weight. Throughout the day we were going to entertained by the velvety smooth voice of The Viking, along with a pretty sweet Spotify playlist curated by Yours Truly.
But sometimes you name a meet the Winter Smash and Mother Nature laughs and says, “Oh I’ll show you a Winter Smash!”
The meet has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 20.
I am so sorry we had to reschedule. But we’re going to have an awesome time on January 20th. Now Madison & Drew & Sway & 57 other lifters are FO. SHO. gonna hit bigger numbers. The Viking and that fresh playlist will be there too.
I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to Dan & Damon at CrossFit Atlanta and to Josh Rohr and the USAPL for your assistance and flexibility in rescheduling the event.
REGISTERED LIFTERS: please notify me by Friday, 12/15 with your decision on the event. You have options to a) compete on 1/20, b) transfer your registration to the Georgia state meet on Feb 10-11, c) request a refund. Refunds will be processed on 12/15. As I hear back from each of you, I am updating a new field on the roster with your decision. You can see the roster here.
Since many lifters are no longer able to compete, there are now some open spots for those on the wait list if you want to lift now. Registration for those spots will re-open on Wednesday, 12/13 at teamlissmash.com. The registration fee is $85 (+$30 per additional division)
Many volunteers can no longer help on the new date, so we will be recruiting more volunteers.
To volunteer (or update your original volunteer status), please go here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d49ada828aafd0-volunteers
If inclement weather strikes again on 1/20, we will delay the event start time by 3 hours and hold the event anyway.
We had a goal with this event to raise $2,000+ to donate to the Southern Poverty Law Center. You can still help us reach this goal by coming to the meet on 1/20. Spectator admission is $10 and all funds raised at the door will be donated to the SPLC.
Thank you & I look forward to seeing you on 1/20!
In strength,
Lis Saunders
