IT’S MEET WEEK! This Saturday I compete for the first time in 2 1/2 years. All the heavy training is done and I’m SO excited for the weekend!
Early this week I had my final heavy training days. Squat felt good. Bench press is stronger than ever. And surprise, surprise, my deadlift is feeling AWESOME.
My final day of heavy deadlifts called for 2-5 reps at 310#, a number predicted to be my starting attempt for the meet. But 310 moved so well on Set 1 that we decided to put even more weight on the bar!
So I hit 325# for an easy triple, which is a sumo deadlift PR, nbd.
I just made the switch over to pulling sumo a few months ago, and these paused sumo deadlifts I’ve been suffering through for three weeks seem to actually work. Trust your program. What a concept.
My goals for the meet are:
1. Qualify for Raw Nationals
2. Break my old Georgia state squat record and set a new one
3. Score >400 on Wilks coefficient
4. Conserve energy throughout the meet so that I’m not crawling like this to the platform for deadlifts:
The last few times I competed I didn’t have a good meet-day nutrition plan. As the day went on my energy tanked because I ate too much fat and protein and not enough carbs on comp day.
New plan this year=lotsa carbs, moderate protein, low fat.
**Post-meet Cuban food & Sunday donuts are imminent. Duh.
AND at the last two meets I did I was really only excited about squats, which is a bummer since that lift comes first. So I’d smash some big weights on squat and then WOMP WOMP, time to limp through bench and deadlift and see what I can muster up.
For this meet however, my lifts are more balanced. With my newfound sumo deadlift SKILLZ, and those sick bench press gains I made last year while my knee was hurt, things are finally all coming together.
Thanks to everyone for your encouragement on my posts and videos. Perhaps the biggest change for me since I last competed is that I have so many more friends in the powerlifting community now. Although only a few of you will be with me in Orlando, I know many more are cheering from home. Thanks for all the positivity and good vibes.
The meet is not live streamed BUT I begged a handsome Viking to grab video of each attempt, and I think he’s up to it.
So I’ll post updates Saturday morning throughout the comp on Instagram @lissmash & Twitter @lissaunders.
PLUS, check back here next week for a full meet wrap up.
